Buying a network switch: what to compare beyond the port count

KINNEX Team5 min read

Two 24-port switches can differ greatly in what they do.

Compare

  • Layer: layer 2 switching, or layer 3 routing between VLANs.
  • Uplinks: 1, 10 or 25 gigabit, and whether they are fixed or modular.
  • Switching capacity and forwarding rate: should cover all ports at full speed.
  • PoE budget: total watts, not just the standard.
  • Management: web interface, CLI, central cloud or controller management.
  • Security: port security, 802.1X, DHCP snooping, access lists.
  • Redundancy: stacking, dual power, link aggregation, ring protocols.
  • Buffers and QoS: for voice, video and cameras.
  • Operating environment: fanless, temperature range, rack or DIN-rail.

Lifecycle and support

Check the warranty, firmware update policy and the end-of-sale date of the model. A cheap switch with no firmware updates becomes a security risk.

Consistency

Fewer models are easier to support. Choose a small family and standardise on it.

Sizing

Count ports now, add growth, and leave free ports for troubleshooting.
