Web app, native app or PWA: which should you build?

KINNEX Team4 min read

The right type depends on who uses it and what it must do.

Web application

Runs in a browser on any device. One codebase, instant updates, no app-store approval. Limited access to some device features.

Progressive web app

A web app that can be installed on the phone, send notifications and work partly offline. A good middle path for many business tools.

Native or cross-platform mobile app

Built for Android and iOS, with full access to camera, sensors, Bluetooth and background work. Higher cost and store processes. Cross-platform frameworks reduce the effort of building for both.

How to choose

  • Mostly forms, lists and dashboards: web app or PWA.
  • Staff in the field with poor signal: PWA with offline support, or native.
  • Heavy camera, scanning, GPS or Bluetooth use: native or cross-platform.
  • Public consumer audience expecting a store presence: native.

Also consider

Who maintains it, how updates reach users, security of data on devices and integration with your systems.

Start small

Build the smallest version that tests the idea, then grow it.
