Method

How the numbers are worked out

Cost of an hour

Staff × cost per hour × share of work lost, plus revenue lost per hour.

Per outage and per year

Hourly cost × outage length, plus recovery cost, then × outages a year.

What prevention saves

The yearly cost × the share of downtime you expect to avoid, set against the yearly cost of support, if you enter one.

Assumptions and limits

  • Everything here is your own input. The tool does not know your business and makes no promise about results.
  • Left out: reputation, customer loss, data loss, and regulatory cost. Real losses are usually higher.
  • Support has value beyond fewer outages: security updates, backups, planned upgrades and a single point of contact.
