Server room cooling and power

Almost all the power a server draws leaves as heat. This sizes the cooling for it, with growth and a standby unit.

Method

How the numbers are worked out

Heat

IT load plus UPS and distribution losses, lighting (20 W/m²), 100 W for each person, and an allowance for the building envelope, then raised for growth.

Units

The design heat is divided by the cooling unit's capacity and rounded up, plus one standby unit if you choose N+1. 1 tonne of refrigeration (TR) is 3.517 kW.

Supply

Current at 230 V single-phase or 415 V three-phase, at 0.9 power factor.

Assumptions and limits

  • Cooling capacity of a unit falls with outdoor temperature and altitude; the data sheet's rating at your design conditions decides.
  • Heat from sunlit walls and external air leakage depends on the building. A site survey replaces the allowance.
  • Humidity control, fire suppression and leak detection are separate design items.
