Internet bandwidth sizer

Most slow-internet complaints are an upload problem. This sizes both directions, with video calls, backups and cameras counted separately.

  • Check:Upload demand is high against download. Ask for a symmetrical (same speed both ways) leased line or fibre plan; home-style plans give far less upload.

Method

How the numbers are worked out

Download and upload counted apart

Everyday browsing and cloud apps are mostly download (upload is taken as one fifth). Video calls, VoIP, remote camera viewing and backups are symmetrical or upload-heavy, so they are added to upload in full.

Backup as a rate

A nightly backup of a given size is spread over its window: GB × 8000 ÷ seconds gives Mbps.

Round up to a real plan

The headroom is added, then the figure is rounded up to a common plan size.

Assumptions and limits

  • Providers quote 'up to' speeds on shared connections. A dedicated (leased line or enterprise fibre) link gives the speed you pay for.
  • VoIP is taken as 0.1 Mbps per call each way (G.711 with overhead).
  • Software updates and large file shares can briefly exceed this; the headroom absorbs normal peaks, not constant heavy use.
